The Scottish Seabird Centre hosted a Glow Meet for Biology classes on Wednesday and I was in Morgan Academy to provide ICT support to Sheila Herd and her Higher class.
Dr Jan Andries Franeker demonstrated the investigation they carry out on fulmars found dead around UK shores. It was absolutely fascinating and the pupils were really engaged. Dr Franeker not only cut the bird open but discussed the evidence thus revealed. He wove a story round what he found. It was a young bird which had been injured and so died a rather tragic and slow death from starvation. He also explained the reasons for their interest in fulmars and how they were faring in the North Sea.
There were something like a dozen schools watching the demonstration and between them the pupils asked some very interesting questions. I am sure they learnt a lot and I know I learnt a great deal. Never too old to learn!

Hello Bob
The links for Dr van Franeker (he is most insistent that the “van” is part of his name!) are:

I hope that we’ll have many more such interesting events in the near future.
