IPR – Intellectual Property Rights

October 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

Just a wee word of warning about IPR. I recently read an article in Computer Active Magazine (issue 277) from a guy concerning IPR. He was responsible for doing the publicity for a family day organised the amateur theatre company he was a member of. He used an image from Google images in the publicity materials. He then received a demand for £964 from the company who owned the image. This, state Computer Active, is the standard charge for copyright infringement. This is just for one image!! Imagine the cost if your establishment has used 20-30 images!
Remember ignorance is no excuse. Thankfully after Computer Active became involved the company decided to wave the charge as the image was removed from the publicity as soon as the letter demanding payment had been received.
He was lucky. Companies are being less lenient and are clamping down on copyright infringement of images, music and film.
If you are in doubt about the image you are using and it’s origins ….then don’t use it. Try the national Glow Site and the Resources in focus tab.

I have just recently carried out a CPD session with my staff at Craigiebarns on how to create Glow Groups. At the same time I also made them aware of the minefield that IPR can be and the hefty penalties that can be given. I worry that their attitude seems to be ‘no-one will find out, it doesn’t really matter’ etc. Your link, Ian, to this recent article may help to bring home the importance of being careful. Thank you.
