I have been working on the Web 2.0 Glow group and have been investigating Flickr.

Flickr is an online managment and sharing application. It enables us to organise photographs and send them to friends and relatives. You can join Flickr for free and share images immediately. Professional accounts are also available for those who wish to add and display high volumes of photos.

You can also do wonderful things with your photographs like creating an ID badge or making a map or a jigsaw. Big Huge Labs offer a selction of Flickr toys, games and utilities for pupils and staff to explore. Pupils can make a magazine cover, create a school badge or make an inspirational and motivational poster for their classroom. Curriculum for Excellence describes how creativity should be a part of our learning and we should enable pupils to let their creativity flourish by providing them with different contexts for their learning. Flickr is a small part of Web 2.0 which could be used to motivate pupils and enable them to work within an environment familiar to them.

It certainly motivated me. I think this is a fantastic resource which could be put to good use in an educational context.

Pupils could make photograph albums of school trips, or take photographs of experiments and organise these into folders. They could record what they have learned in a pictorial format and display these in interesting ways. They could share this learning with other schools and parents through their blogs, websites or GLOW groups and receive feedback on their work.

Pupils can therefore learn from others and participate in a more social type of learning.

Just thought I’d mention your site’s theme isn’t working on my PC in the Firefox browser… it’s fine in Internet Explorer. Is it me?

    Hi David

Thanks very much for bringing this to our attention. We are currently looking into the issue at the moment. I think that it has something to do with restrictions on our blog, perhaps it is not configured for Firefox. I had a look at blog using Firefox and I see what you mean about not seeing the theme. It isn’t you, there is an issue with viewing the Wordpress theme! I will get back to you when I have more information from Tim Simpson, who manages technical part of blog.

Thanks for the comment Ali – I think there are some wonderful things you can do with Flickr and I am sure pupils will love using it to advance their ICT skills and inspire their imaginations!
